Starting Off as an Extra
The next time you watch a movie, you will see that aside from the protagonists, antagonists, and supporting actors, there are also lots of extras fulfilling minor roles. If you want to make it big in the film industry, you might want to apply for an extra. Do not laugh-famous stars such as Harrison Ford started out as one!
Kick-start your career as a movie extra by becoming a subscriber of a casting website. Once you register, create your personal profile or resume. Do not forget to add your photos, contact details, and skills that are related to the movie-making industry such as scriptwriting, song-writing, modelling, and the like. Add acting demonstration videos as part of your portfolio; these can give you a great advantage over other registrants. In addition, you can apply to upcoming casting alerts that the website regularly announces.
If a talent agent or casting director finds the skills in your profile suitable for his needs, he will then contact you. Be on the set early for the auditions and announcements of further casting information. If you are selected as an extra, be professional in the set. Even if you think you are more creative than the director, do not divert from what you are supposed to do; directors hate that. Do not loiter around, avoid getting overexcited, and do not go to restricted areas. Do your best to fulfil your role.
Finally, a sure way to impress the higher-ups with your enthusiasm and professionalism is to do favours for them. For example, if a director wants your help in building part of the set, accept the chore even if it is a bit beyond what was agreed on.
