First, you need to build up muscles by going to the gym and engaging in weight training. After getting used to the exercise program the gym instructor has created for you, start lifting heavier weights than usual. Doing this causes micro-tears to the muscles being trained; this is the cause of the soreness you feel after an intense session in the gym. After your workout, the body repairs these tears by adding new layers of muscle, which results in muscle growth.

Since muscle repair and growth happens when you are actually resting, you need to have adequate sleep. If this aspect is lacking, your muscles will not have the opportunity to build up and recover. Usually, seven to eight hours of sleep is needed.

You also need a specialised high-protein diet to gain weight. That means you need to eat lots of meat, eggs, soya, and other related foodstuffs. In addition, since you are working out, you need lots of calories to provide the energy requirements for your weight training. Eating grains, whole wheat bread, rice, and cereals provides you with the carbohydrates needed for energy and protein synthesis. For maximum effect, you need to split your daily food intake into 5 to 7 meals of equal nutritional content. Doing so also reduces overindulging in food. Finally, add healthy supplements such as wheat protein milkshakes and amino acid tablets to aid in muscle growth.
