If you have decided to create a bonus room, your first step should be to gather the family and plan the project together. From there, begin by creating a wish list. Ask everyone to write the kind of activities they would like to have in this room. Then as a team, work through the list and identify what should be the priorities. It would be helpful to conduct this inside the targeted space so as to keep some perspective on how much the place can accommodate.

After which, determine which zone each activity will be located. If playing video and watching movies are on the top of everyone's list, then decide on a special place for these activities. Do you need space for storing board games, or a corner for reading and storytelling? Carefully create the floor plan to be able to maximise the space.

Then, identify the needed furnishings. What are the things that you need to buy? What can you pull out from other rooms? You do not need to spend a fortune to complete your recreation centre. Search the shops that sell used furniture or look for multi-function pieces. There are many affordable furniture solutions available these days.

Lastly, shop together. As the recreation room will be everybody's domain, each member of the family should have a say on the furnishing. So, armed with room dimension and list of needs, leave the house for the store with everyone aboard the family vehicle!
